Our Philosophy

At Hub Wildlings, we believe children thrive when they are trusted to follow their curiosity, supported to express their authentic selves, and given time and space to connect deeply - with themselves, with each other, and with the natural world. Our approach honours the whole child: nurturing their emotional, physical, and cognitive development, celebrating their unique gifts, and encouraging a lifelong love of learning.

Connection at the Heart

Connection is central to everything we do. Children's grow and learn most deeply when they feel at peace in themselves and with the people around them and the environment they inhabit. By observing, listening, and interacting, they develop empathy, social awareness, and a sense of shared responsibility.

Lev Vygotsky
"Through others, we become ourselves."— Lev Vygotsky

Being outside in nature offers a profound context for connection. Observing plants, wildlife, and natural cycles provides opportunities for wonder, reflection, and a sense of belonging to something larger than oneself. Time in nature nurtures calm, reduces stress, and fosters resilience, while deepening children's appreciation of the environment and their place within it.

Gary Snyder
"Nature is not a place to visit, it is home."— Gary Snyder

Being in the Now

We emphasise presence and mindfulness. Learning happens when we are fully engaged with the moment, almost in a state of flow. Children are naturally attuned to the present, and the outdoors provides the perfect setting to dive completely and instinctively into each moment. Being in nature anchors in ways little else can. Children understand what it is to feel that sense of wild liberation from the past and future - fully immersing in what it is to be alive - to play.

Alan Watts
"This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play."— Alan Watts
Froebel
"Play is the highest level of child development. It is the spontaneous expression of thought and feeling - an expression which his inner life requires...Play is never trivial; it is serious and deeply significant."— Froebel (1826) in Lilley (1967)
John Muir
"Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."— John Muir

Empowering Autonomy

At Hub Wildlings, children are empowered to notice and respond to their own needs - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual - while also cultivating care and consideration for others. In this safe, guided environment, children can explore their own boundaries and, in doing so, deepen their respect and appreciation for the boundaries of those around them. By making decisions that balance their own needs with the impact on others, they develop resilience, self-responsibility, and a richer sense of self, growing as holistic, self-aware individuals.

Maria Montessori
"I have observed that the child, on condition that he is granted the freedom to work, learns, becomes cultured, absorbs knowledge and gains experiences that become embedded in his spirit. Like seeds planted in fertile ground, they soon germinate and bear fruit."— Maria Montessori

Facilitators guide and mentor, providing support while children explore, experiment, and make decisions. Risky play is an essential part of this process. By climbing, balancing, and testing their limits, children learn hazard assessment, resilience, courage, and confidence. These experiences build self-awareness, teach delayed gratification, and foster problem-solving skills - all within a safe, guided environment.

Caroline Paul
"Risky play is really important for kids - all kids... When kids get outside and practice bravery, they learn valuable life lessons."— Caroline Paul

Celebrating Each Child

It is our ambition that every child experiences the joy of being themselves and knowing that they belong. We hope that while they are with us they learn to not only identify, but also to love and appreciate their own needs, preferences, strengths, and challenges. Just as the rainbow - our logo - draws its beauty from many colours, we are incomplete without one another's uniqueness and brilliance. Each person has something equally valuable and wonderful to contribute.

Inspired by Gerald Edelman's view of the brain as an orchestra:

Oliver Sacks
"The players are connected. Each player, interpreting the music individually, constantly modulates and is modulated by the others. There is no final or 'master' interpretation; the music is collectively created, and every performance is unique."— Oliver Sacks

"What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me"

— Kermit the Frog

As we strive to foster curiosity, connection, presence, autonomy, and gratitude for self and others, we see children in our care flourish as confident, compassionate, and engaged individuals - ready to explore, wonder, and grow. And that is really rather incredible to be a part of. We love our job!
